Wet Rot Treatment
What is Wet Rot?
There are many species of wet rots which often share the same characteristics as dry rot, the most common being Cellar Fungus (Coniophora puteana) and Mine Fungus (Fibroporia vaillantii). If allowed to grow unchecked, wet rot can cause serious damage to timber structures. Dampness through external defects such as leaking roofs, gutters and stone pointing or internal radiator leaks provides the necessary moisture content to initiate an attack. Wet rot generally attacks timber with higher moisture content than dry rot, typically in excess of 30%. It is important to identify if you have a wet rot problem and find an approproate wet rot treatment as quickly as possible. The easiest way to do this is to contact Richardson & Starling who are qualified within wet rot treatments and are wet rot treatment specialists.
Attacked timber depending on the species is often dark in colour and is left with longitudinal cracking.
Unlike dry rot, wet rot can not spread through masonry and will stop growing when the source of moisture is removed.
There is often no mycelium present but sometimes strands can resemble black fern like growths and can be observed on the surface of timbers. They are confined to the damp area and do not spread to adjoining dry timber.
There is often a damp musty smell present.

Our surveyor will carry out a thorough inspection of the property to assess the extent of any wet rot damage and will determine if any timbers require treatment or replacement.
Wet Rot Treatment
Like dry rot, it is important to locate and eliminate the underlying source of the dampness responsible for the wet rot attack, ideally below 20%.
Exposure work may be required in order to ascertain the full extent of the wet rot outbreak prior to recommending the appropriate remedial, treatment works.
Remedial work will consist of removing all affected timber, carrying out insitu chemical treatments and replacing these items with suitable pre treated timber. If possible, introduce measures such as ventilation or a damp barrier between timber and masonry.
