Dry Rot Treatment by Richardson & Starling

Dry Rot Treatment

What is Dry Rot?

Dry rot (Serpula lacrymans) is the most frequent and the most serious cause of damage to timber in buildings and affects all types of property, old and new alike.  Dampness, through external defects such as leaking roofs or gutters or internal radiator leaks combined with lack of ventilation provides the ideal conditions for fungal attack.  Since dry rot normally affects timber that is damp, typically with moisture content in excess of 20%, it is important to remove the source of moisture from the core of any dry rot eradication strategy.

It is important to identify if you have a dry rot problem and find an approproate dry rot treatment as quickly as possible. The easiest way to do this is to contact Richardson & Starling who are qualified within dry rot treatments and are dry rot treatment specialists.

How to Identify Dry Rot & If You Require Treatment

Dry rot has a distinct mushroom smell and white fungal growth often with yellow and lilac tinges. Damage is often confined to timber but can easily grow through bricks and mortars and finishes such as plaster or paint. Large flat mushroom-like reddy brown fruiting bodies may be the first visible sign of a dry rot problem, and they produce numerous spores which are normally brick-red in colour and are deposited as a layer of dust throughout the building. The decayed timber can be crumbled between your fingers. The dry rot fungus leaves deep cracks running across the grain, and there is often evidence of off-white sheets of cotton wool like cushions on the surface of the wood or masonry.

Dry Rot Treatment

It is important to locate and eliminate the underlying source of the dampness responsible for the dry rot attack. Exposure work may be required in order to ascertain the full extent of the dry rot outbreak prior to recommending the appropriate remedial works.

Remedial work will consist of removing all dry rot affected timber and wall finishes, carrying out insitu chemical treatments and replacing these items with suitable pre treated timber and wall finishes.
