PROBABLE CAUSE

Patches on external walls usually on lower exposed elevations.

After rain

Penetrating Dampness

As above, also top floor internal but related to external defects (chimneys, flashing, windows, rainwater goods etc.)

Patches or continuous bands in ground floor rooms extending up from floor level.

Usually persistent, prolonged damp.

Rising Dampness

Damp patches showing on plaster as an after effect of rising damp. Occasionally, damp patches on chimney breast.

Before and possibly during rain (typically comes and goes').

Hygroscopic (damp absorbed from the atmosphere by salts in plaster & general masonry)

Patches on external walls, often in corners, within cupboards. Moulds disfiguring surface, especially prevalent in or near kitchens and bathrooms.

Usually in cold weather

Condensation

Surface water, floor slab uplift or cracking, damp patches or ponding.

After prolonged rain. Local flooding.

Hydrostatic water pressure.
